Every creature in Derpy Pets started as a drawing by one of our kids: on printer paper, on the back of homework, in ballpoint pen during a long car ride. We kept every mistake, gave each one real texture and its own strange little world, and bound them into a book.

Our story

How Derpy Pets began

It started with a crocheted animal. Our oldest daughter had been teaching herself to crochet, and one of her little creatures came out adorably off. Her mom laughed and said, "We should sell these. Derpy pets."

That sent us digging through the boxes: old drawings, kindergarten projects, birthday cards and fridge art where we honestly couldn't tell what was happening, or what the drawing was even supposed to be. We loved every single one.

Derpy Pets brings those wonderfully wrong creations back to life. Every page in this book started as a real kid's drawing, kept weird on purpose and turned into something to colour, laugh at and keep. It's our way to re-love those memories, one derpy creature at a time.

Never fix
the weird.

Most tools quietly “correct” a kid's drawing into a normal animal. We do the opposite. The mistakes are the whole point, so they stay exactly where the kid put them.

Stilt legs.

The Sabertoothed Llama walks on four sticks with discs on the end. So that’s how we drew it.

Nobody knows why the zigzag turtle has a second face on its back. It’s staying.

One dial decides how far we go. Turn it and watch what happens to our betta fish. The first three settings never change the shape that was drawn.
